Navratri Saree Collection: Colours, Saree Choices, and Their Divine Significance

Navratri, a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated all around the globe, celebrates the divine feminine energy over nine nights. Each day of Navratri is dedicated to a different form of the goddess Durga, and people are encouraged to wear specific colours that would honour these goddesses. The colours for each day have special meanings. Let's understand the nine goddesses of Navratri, their significance, and the colours associated with each day of the celebration in 2024.

—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1: Goddess Shailaputri – Yellow: Goddess Shailaputri, often referred to as the daughter of the mountains (Shaila meaning mountain and Putri meaning daughter), embodies the essence of nature. As a representation of Mother Earth, she holds a trident and a lotus while riding a bull. She symbolizes stability and strength, forming the root of all creation.

Colour Association: Yellow, the colour of the first day, signifies joy, happiness, and positive energy. It reflects the grounded and resilient nature of Goddess Shailaputri, symbolizing the vibrancy and strength of the mountains.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2: Goddess Brahmacharini – Green: On the second day, Goddess Brahmacharini, known for her asceticism and devotion, is honored. She is depicted walking barefoot, holding a rosary and a water pot (Kamandalu). Brahmacharini symbolizes spiritual enlightenment and the pursuit of knowledge and meditation.

Colour Association: Green, the colour for this day, stands for growth, renewal, and harmony with nature. It reflects Goddess Brahmacharini's spiritual purity and the calmness she embodies through her ascetic lifestyle.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 3: Goddess Chandraghanta – Grey: The third day is dedicated to Goddess Chandraghanta, a fierce warrior form of Durga. She is known for her bravery and rides a tiger, armed with multiple weapons. The crescent moon on her forehead signifies her role as a fierce protector and destroyer of evil.

Colour Association: Grey, the colour of the day, represents balance, neutrality, and wisdom. It mirrors the composed yet powerful presence of Goddess Chandraghanta, reflecting her role in maintaining equilibrium in the battle against evil.

—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 4: Goddess Kushmanda – Orange: On the fourth day, devotees celebrate Goddess Kushmanda, who is believed to have created the universe with her radiant smile. She symbolizes abundance, growth, and the life-giving energy that sustains the cosmos.

Colour Association: Orange is associated with this day, symbolizing energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. This colour reflects Goddess Kushmanda's vibrant nature and her role in the universe's creation and sustenance.

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 5: Goddess Skandamata – White: The fifth day honours Goddess Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda). She is depicted with her son in her lap, symbolizing motherly love and nurturing strength.

Colour Association: White, the colour for this day, signifies purity, peace, and clarity. It embodies the nurturing and protective qualities of Goddess Skandamata, reflecting the pure and supportive nature of motherhood.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 6: Goddess Katyayani – Red: On the sixth day, Goddess Katyayani, known for her fierce form and victory over the demon Mahishasura, is worshipped. She represents courage, valor, and triumph over evil.

Colour Association: Red is the colour for this day, symbolizing power, passion, and strength. It reflects the intense and dynamic energy of Goddess Katyayani in her battle against darkness.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 7: Goddess Kalaratri – Royal Blue: Goddess Kalaratri, the most intense form of Durga, is revered on the seventh day. She is believed to destroy ignorance and evil, leading devotees toward spiritual awakening.

Colour Association: Royal Blue, the colour of the day, represents knowledge, power, and depth. It symbolizes the transformative power of Goddess Kalaratri, reflecting the profound wisdom that follows the eradication of ignorance.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 8: Goddess Mahagauri – Pink: The eighth day is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri, who symbolizes purity, peace, and spiritual enlightenment. Her radiant form represents the highest level of purity and the removal of past sins.

Colour Association: Pink, the colour for this day, signifies love, compassion, and nurturing. It reflects the goddess's gentle and purifying nature, representing her ability to cleanse and restore balance to the soul.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 9: Goddess Siddhidatri – Purple: The final day of Navratri is devoted to Goddess Siddhidatri, who grants supernatural powers and represents spiritual completeness and perfection. She blesses her devotees with wisdom and knowledge.

Colour Association: Purple, the colour of the final day, symbolizes spirituality, luxury, and ambition. It reflects the divine grace of Goddess Siddhidatri, representing the culmination of the spiritual journey and ultimate fulfillment.

—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, each goddess and her associated colour during Navratri hold a special significance that goes beyond just the surface. It’s about channeling the energy and qualities of the goddess herself. Whether it's the fierce courage of Katyayani in yellow or the peaceful purity of Mahagauri in peacock green, these colours help us connect to the divine essence of the festival.

Now, think about how powerful it can be to embody these qualities through your attire. By choosing a saree in the colour of the day, you’re not just following tradition—you’re becoming a living expression of the goddess's energy. Imagine draping yourself in a bold red saree on the day of Kushmanda, symbolizing creativity and life force, or opting for a serene white saree to honor Chandraghanta’s calm and warrior spirit.

Celebrate each day with a saree that complements the goddess and her divine colour. It’s a beautiful way to feel even more connected to the festival, and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love an excuse to wear a stunning saree that makes you feel empowered and elegant all at once?

Celebrate Navratri in a way that’s both spiritual and stylish!

Colour of the Month for Navratri - Blue

Navratri, a nine-night festival celebrating the Divine Feminine, is a vibrant spectacle of colour, music, and devotion. While traditional attire often features vibrant hues like red, pink, and yellow, there's a growing trend of incorporating the colour blue into Navratri celebrations. This shift is not merely a fashion statement but a reflection of evolving cultural norms and a deeper appreciation for the significance of the colour blue.

Blue, often associated with tranquility, peace, and spirituality, holds a special place in various cultures worldwide. In Hinduism, blue is linked to Lord Krishna, a beloved deity often depicted with blue skin. Krishna's blue colour symbolizes infinity, the vastness of the cosmos, and the divine.

One can connect with the spiritual essence of the festival and honor the divine feminine in a unique way. It's a departure from traditional gender norms, where certain colours might have been associated exclusively with men or women. Blue challenges these stereotypes and promotes a sense of inclusivity and equality.

Moreover, blue can also symbolize unity and harmony. It's a colour often used to represent the sky and water, elements that bring people together and sustain life. By wearing blue during Navratri, participants can foster a sense of connection with nature and with their fellow devotees.

The Psychology of Prints: How Patterns in Fabrics Influence Your Choices

-Written by Smruti Umredkar (Textile Designer)

Science says, "The brain loves patterns," which explains a lot about our efficiency that comes with routine and consistency. When it comes to tangible uses of patterns, those that mostly influence our psychology are visual. The first thing noticeable when you meet someone is their choice of colour or clothing. Based on this, one builds a perception of the person and their related choices and decisions.

We all know that human choices are often based on different perceptions, which have an underlying scientific reasoning. The choice of prints or colours in an outfit represents you and your state of mind to some extent. On the other hand, some people prefer to wear the same combination of clothing every day to reduce decision fatigue. Certain concepts have been revolutionised in fashion, such as colour blocking, which is the opposite of the phenomenon known as "colour interaction."

Optical illusions are widely used in prints, and these affect the visual appearance of the human body. It is often suggested that stripes make people look taller, and larger individuals are encouraged to opt for finer prints. Believe it or not, the patterns you choose can influence how others perceive you. Floral prints, for example, make you seem more approachable, while geometric prints convey a sense of professionalism.

However, the selection of prints and colours also works on the emotions they evoke. Wearing your favourite print or colour may make you feel cheerful on a day you feel low or add a dash of excitement to your mood. Many people have something in their wardrobe that makes them feel confident. As discussed earlier, the repetition and symmetry in patterns create a sense of balance that is soothing and comforting.

On the other hand, complex prints influence the cognitive processes of the brain. Polka dots are synonymous with playfulness, which is why they are so often preferred in children's wear. Abstract patterns, which are unique and non-repetitive, allow for a degree of creativity that reflects individuality. These patterns evoke an artistic feel in both the creator and the wearer. People who value creative expression may find these particularly appealing.

It's crucial to consider the context when choosing patterns. What may be appropriate and empowering in one setting might not have the same impact in another. For instance, a bold geometric pattern may exude confidence in a professional environment but could feel out of place at a casual gathering.

Singhania’s Wardrobe: Lehenga Beyond Fashion

-Written by Smruti Umredkar (Textile Designer)

The lehenga is an ensemble of three pieces: a blouse (choli), a long skirt (lehenga), and a sash (dupatta). A favourite for decades, the evolution of lehengas from traditional to contemporary is worth noting.

In ancient times, the lehenga was actually a draped lower garment called Antariya. A long strip of fabric was wrapped around the waist and passed through the legs to create the Antariya. A veil worn over the head or shoulders was called an "Uttariya," and a band of fabric used on the chest was called "Stanapatta." These garments eventually evolved into the stitched lehenga, choli, and dupatta we know today.

The early form of the lehenga evolved further with the arrival of the Mughals in India. Mughal women wore three-piece suits reminiscent of their Persian heritage. During their time in India, the silhouette became more modern and evolved into the lehenga we recognize today.

During this period, the length of lehengas typically reached the ankles, which indicated marital status through bejeweled toes, as the face was covered with a veil. Lehengas worn by tribal women were shorter, ranging from the ankles to the knees, allowing for ease of movement during daily chores. After independence, the saree gained more popularity, and lehengas were largely relegated to rural areas. Over time, sarees became the preferred choice for both urban and aspiring rural women.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that the lehenga saw a resurgence. Media and Indian designers began to bring it back into fashion. During this period, lehengas underwent significant changes, with various cuts and trends emerging, such as A-line lehengas, fish-cut lehengas, and kalidar lehengas. The craft of lehenga-making improved significantly, with fabrics like Banarasi becoming popular and considered traditional. Gradually, kalamkari, patola, and other high-end crafts were introduced, further enhancing the lehenga’s appeal.

Designer lehengas gained high popularity as designers started releasing their bridal collections. They experimented with unique styles, setting new trends and offering a range of options. Today, designer lehengas are not only exuberant but also come in affordable options available online.

Customization of lehengas has reached new heights, with personalized messages, hand-painted designs, and each panel crafted with attention to the customer’s preferences. Like in the past, customers are no longer limited to what is available in stores. A bespoke lehenga, made with a fully customized design, offers brides an empowering and creative process. Each designer lehenga becomes a beautiful collaboration with sentimental value for the bride. The market today caters to all kinds of customers—whether they know exactly what they want or are unsure—ensuring that no one in need of a lehenga will leave without one!

Saree Facts

During the British Raj, the saree became a symbol of resistance against colonial rule. Prominent freedom fighters, like Sarojini Naidu and Kasturba Gandhi, wore sarees to promote Indian identity and heritage.

Several famous personalities have popularized sarees on a global stage. For example, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Bollywood actress Sridevi were known for their elegant saree choices, influencing fashion trends and international perceptions of the garment.

Beyond traditional wear, sarees have been creatively repurposed into various items like bags, cushion covers, and even wall art, showcasing their versatility.

Sarees have been depicted in ancient Indian art and literature. The famous Indian epic, the Mahabharata, mentions the saree as a symbol of dignity and respect, and it was used to honour guests and dignitaries.
